Odin Banishes Loki’s Children

Odin learned that Loki had a wife, Angrboda, in Jotunheim, and that together they had three monstrous children. He sent the gods to seize these children and bring them before him.

Loki’s first child was the prodigious serpent Jormungandr. Odin took hold of Jormungandr and flung him into the ocean. There he dwelt, growing and growing, until he became so enormous that his body circled the world and he bit into his own tail. Gods and men called him Midgardsormr, the Midgard Serpent.

Loki’s second child, Hel, took the form of a woman, but one side of her body was black-skinned living flesh, while the other half was the pallid flesh of a corpse. Odin sent her far away, to the world that came to bear her name, and gave her dominion over all those who died of starvation, disease, or old age.
